This simulation course is designed for pediatric critical care, neonatology and surgery providers caring for patients who receive Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO). Course attendees will learn the basic physiology of ECMO, anticoagulation, transport of patients on ECMO, ECPR, as well as general patient management. Application of ECMO to special populations, such as children with congenital diaphragmatic hernias, will also be discussed. After two days of hands-on learning and simulation, participants will be able to identify candidates for ECMO, prepare the patient for cannulation, troubleshoot the circuit and handle ECMO emergencies. 


                                                   

Target Audience

This course is designated for pediatric critical care, neonatology and surgery providers caring for patients who receive Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO). 

Learning Objectives

  1. Determine indications for ECMO and its application in the management of patients.
  2. Identify, anticipate and treat ECMO complications.
  3. Employ appropriate treatment strategies for the daily management of patients on ECMO.
