UT Southwestern Clinical Workshop: Point-of Care Ultrasound (RP2004A)
CANCELED for 2020
This activity is designed to introduce the use of ultrasonography into everyday practice for the evaluation of patients in the perioperative, outpatient, or in-patient setting. Point-of-care (POC) ultrasound (POCUS) has been a breakthrough in the rapid diagnosis of abdominal injury, pulmonary pathology, and cardiac disease in emergency medicine, critical care, and anesthesiology. Ultrasound use has also become increasingly more common in vascular access. In addition, ultrasound has also revolutionized regional anesthesiology for the placement of pain blocks in the perioperative setting as well as the pain clinic.
This activity will include technical based skill sessions on standardized patients accompanied by brief didactic presentations as well as a scenario based learning lab on patient simulators. The course will teach the basis of POC cardiac ultrasound, POC lung ultrasound, POC abdominal ultrasound, and ultrasound for regional anesthesia.
Target Audience
Physicians, particularly those specializing in Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Critical Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Surgery as well as Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery
Learning Objectives
- State the uses and limitations of ultrasound technology
- Demonstrate the use of ultrasound instrumentation to maximize imaging and minimizing harm to patients
- Perform POC ultrasound image acquisition and analyze the results
- Perform regional anesthesia procedure using ultrasound imaging
- Perform vascular access techniques using ultrasound imaging
- Application of imaging results to make informed decisions on patient management, particularly in the acute setting.
