Getting your Surgical Simulation Program off the Ground: From Administration to Curricula (RP2504A)

Dallas, TX US
April 4, 2025

This course is for surgeon educators who wish to utilize simulation to teach medical students, residents, and fellows. It provides a comprehensive review of how to start a simulation program for surgeons. The components of establishing a robust surgical simulation curriculum are included in this faculty development course, and will provide a comprehensive review of developing a plan to acquire necessary resources to implement a simulation educational program for surgeons, including resource allocation, curriculum design, effective feedback, pre-briefing and de-briefing and deliberate practice modalities. The promotion of scholarship from this type of education will also be reviewed. This course will entail two distinct components, 1) didactic presentations (hybrid), which covers foundational elements to build a general surgery simulation program, is accessible to all learners, and is the prerequisite to the 2nd component 2) a hands-on skill-building workshop ( in-person) to apply knowledge gained. This activity is designed for surgeons and educators who wish to utilize simulation to teach healthcare learners, residents, and fellows.

Learning Objectives

Segment I: Didactic (Hybrid: In-Person and Livestream)
By the end of this course segment, all learners should be able to:

  1. Describe required resources for a simulation educational program, including funding, space, personnel, equipment acquisition and existing evidence-based curriculum.
  2. Define how to match the appropriate simulation modality to the defined learning objectives.
  3. Describe the theoretical underpinnings of simulation-based education.
  4. Explain the importance of debriefing/reflective techniques.
  5. Describe deliberate practice and proficiency-based training.
  6. Explain high quality simulation facilitation.

Segment II: Skills-building (In-Person Only; must complete course Segment I)
By the end of this course segment, all learners should be able to:

  1. Develop and execute a simulated experience with discreet learning objectives and constructive debrief.
  2. Demonstrate effective learner feedback methods, using debriefing and reflective techniques
