205 Ophthalmology Sub-Specialty Series - "Ophthalmology Review for the Primary Care Physician" (082519)
The purpose of this program is to provide up-to-date information on, and workup and management of, neuro-ophthalmic problems to better prepare the clinician should they encounter a patient with such a problem. It is particularly important for the primary clinician to be aware of these topics since a referral to a neuro-ophthalmic specialist cannot always occur in a timely fashion (due to practitioner scarcity). Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to understand the varying presentations of neurological diseases and the manifestations of related conditions, as well as how to proceed with treatment, diagnostic testing, and when to provide referrals to ophthalmologists.
Target Audience
This live symposium is appropriate for ophthalmologists, primary care physicians, neurologists, optometrists and other health care professionals who would benefit from a discussion on the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic medical conditions related to various presentations of neurological diseases.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
• Discuss how to diagnose and work up the underlying cause of optic neuritis
• Identify etiologies of and treatment strategies for ptosis
• Evaluate and describe a swollen optic disc
• Discuss current diagnostic options in diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri
• Identify clinical presentation of and risks associated with herpes zoster ophthalmicus
• Distinguish between glaucomatous damage due to optic neuropathy and glaucoma
