Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a common neuropsychiatric condition that leads to higher rates of disability, diminished quality of life, and increased health care utilization. It continues to be underrecognized within the medical community. A compassionate communication of the diagnosis and referral to evidence-based treatments can result in considerable improvements for those living with FND. This live-streamed webinar aims to provide education about the diagnosis, management, and multidisciplinary approach to FND.
Target Audience
The target audience will be health care clinicians involved in clinical neuroscience, e.g. physicians, advanced practice providers, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and rehabilitative therapists (PT/OT/Speech & Language) who may span departments of psychiatry, neurology, and/or physiatry.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize FND is a diagnosis based on positive signs and features as seen on the physical exam/semiology, and is not a diagnosis of exclusion.
- Develop strategies to communicate a diagnosis of FND clearly, compassionately, and confidently.
- Discuss strategies for appropriately referring patients to evidence-based interventions, e.g. physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech & language therapy, and psychotherapy.
- Discuss and provided educational resources on the diagnosis and treatment of FND.
- Identify and discuss strategies for combating stigma that contributes to gaps in care and poor outcomes.
