Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) / Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia (UGRA) Workshop 2026 (RP2604E)

Dallas, TX US
April 25, 2026

The widespread availability of portable ultrasound machines has provided physicians and allied health professionals with the opportunity to utilize point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) at the patient’s bedside as a non-invasive examination tool. The use of POCUS can augment physical examination and allow practitioners to rapidly diagnose specific conditions and guide interventions. In addition, utilizing Ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia (UGRA) allows the clinician real-time ability to visualize neural structures, needle advancement, and local anesthetic spread. UGRA is associated with improved success rates and reductions in performance times in comparison to traditional approaches.

This live hands-on, full-day simulation course is comprised of two sections: (1) review the basics of ultrasound through a series of lectures and hands-on practice in techniques utilizing point-of-care ultrasound for the evaluation of cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal and vascular conditions; and (2) demonstrations for effectively performing the most commonly used forms of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia blocks.

Target Audience

Physicians and other healthcare professionals in the specialties:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Neurological Surgery
  • Surgery

Learning Objectives

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS):

  1. Review the physics of ultrasound imaging.
  2. Utilize ultrasound physics to improve point-of-care ultrasound imaging.
  3. Utilize point-of-care cardiac imaging to evaluate cardiac function and make specific diagnoses.
  4. Utilize point-of-care pulmonary imaging to diagnose and exclude specific lung conditions.
  5. Utilize point-of-care abdominal imaging to evaluate the acute abdomen.
  6. Utilize point-of-care vascular imaging to detect deep venous thrombosis.
  7. Integrate point-of-care imaging to augment physical examination and improve management of multiple conditions.

Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia (UGRA):

  1. Demonstrate the correct sonographic technique for identification of the brachial plexus and individual nerves of the upper extremity and associated vascular and musculoskeletal structures.
  2. Demonstrate the correct sonographic technique for identification of nerves of the lower extremity and associated vascular and musculoskeletal structures.
  3. Demonstrate the correct sonographic technique for performance of truncal blocks including transversus abdominis plane block, rectus sheath block, and quadratus lumborum block.
  4. Demonstrate the correct sonographic technique for performance of chest wall blocks, including erector spinae plane block, serratus anterior plane block, pectoserratus plane block, and parasternal blocks (pectointercostal fascial block and transversus thoracic muscle plane block).
  5. Describe risk factors of local anesthetic systemic toxicity and propose a strategy to avoid and treat this complication.
