Target Audience

Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, athletic trainers and other health care professionals who care for sport-related conditions and injuries should attend to improve their ability to counsel patients and families as well as prevent and care for these conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss risk factors for DDH meriting selective ultrasound screening, appropriate timing and reason or screening with expectant and new parents.
  • Describe key elements of infant hip exam (e.g. Barlow/Ortolani maneuvers and Klisic test) and findings reflective of DDH.
  • Describe signs of late-presenting DDH in the ambulatory patient.
  • Describe anticipatory guidance for families of newborns on healthy hip swaddling.
  • Discuss general treatment strategies and success of nonoperative treatment in infants diagnosed with DDH.
