Parkland Annual Clinical Quality Training 2020 (JS2010D)

September 4, 2020 to October 31, 2020

This Parkland-specific training will focus on selected clinical quality and patient safety topics identified as key areas of improvement such as accurate assessment documentation,
provider well-being, and patient and provider physical safety. Parkland clinicians and physicians (Active Medical Staff, residents, fellows) will be able to articulate Parkland
policies and procedures and follow Parkland's standards for quality patient care to improve patient outcomes and efficiency, and decrease unwanted variability and risk.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

Workplace Violence - What Parkland Staff Needs to Know

  • Define workplace violence
  • List factors that contribute to violent behaviors
  • Describe measures Parkland has put in place to prevent and address workplace violence
  • Explain measures individuals can take to reduce risk of violence
  • Identify levels of behavior escalation and steps to de-escalate
  • Select actions to take when violence occurs

Patient Identification: Managing Special Circumstances

  • Describe the process for correctly identifying patients using 2 identifiers
  • Identify situations that necessitate exceptions to the 2-identifier rule
  • Explain appropriate identification processes for the exceptional situations

Promoting Patient Safety Through Staff Well-being

  • Describe the correlation between staff wellness and patient safety
  • Identify signs of personal stress and describe mitigation strategies
  • Recognize signs of colleagues' stress and describe how to appropriately address it 

Measuring Effectiveness of Care

  • List at least 3 Hospital-Acquired Conditions monitored by Parkland
  • Explain the potential impact of HACs
  • Describe actions to take to reduce HACs

Documenting Gender Identity

  • Discuss law as it applies to transgender patient care and how non-compliance can affect Parkland
  • Describe how to be more sensitive in providing care to transgender patients
  • Explain how to determine which pronoun to use in addressing transgender patients.
  • Effectively use the new Epic fields for documenting gender identity
