[3:30pm - 4:30pm] Session 2: Basics of Debriefing: Creating a Psychologically Safe Learning Environment
Debriefing in the context of medical simulation refers to a method of instruction that takes place after an experiential event where learners can reflect on the experience and solidify learning. The debrief is usually a facilitator led but learner focused discussion with the goal of improving clinical skills, judgment, and communication. There are many elements that go into facilitating an effective debrief, one of the most essential is fostering a psychologically safe environment. In this workshop, we will discuss key elements in promoting psychological safety and performing an effective debrief. Anyone who is interested in learning more in regard to debriefing is encouraged to attend. Prior experience with debriefing in the simulation environment is helpful but not required. Each participant should be prepared to actively participate as we will provide the opportunity to practice these skills.
At the Conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of a debrief in simulation
- Define Psychological Safety as it applies to debriefing in simulation
- Describe techniques to promote Psychological Safety in the simulation setting
- Explain the technique of debriefing with “good judgment”
- Recognize the importance of a psychologically safe debriefing for effective learning
