[3:30pm - 4:30pm] Session 3: How to run a virtual simulation for communication and high fidelity

Dallas, TX US
May 12, 2021

Simulation, which has historically required face-to-face interaction, is now being adapted to a virtual environment in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While use of a virtual platform for simulation mandates new modifications, it also creates opportunity for more robust participation regardless of geographic location. From the perspective of team training activities this can actually be an asset rather than a hindrance once simulation champions are able to adapt their learning activities to a virtual platform.

This session will focus on several different ideas for how to adapt team communication activities as well as high fidelity training scenarios into virtual simulations that can be done either in-situ or in the simulation center. Prior experience with team communication and/or high fidelity simulation is helpful but not required. Regardless of prior experience, participants should come prepared to discuss a communication-based activity and/or high fidelity scenarios they would like to adapt to a virtual space for facilitator and audience brainstorming and feedback. A secondary goal of this session is to serve as a forum for exchange of ideas about how to better support translation of team training and high fidelity simulation activities into the virtual environment, including discussion of available resources on campus.

Learning Objectives

At the Conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss challenges and opportunities related to translating in-person team building/high fidelity scenarios into a virtual environment
  • Identify the most important considerations when adapting team training or high-fidelity scenarios to the virtual space
  • Discuss necessary modifications for effective virtual team training/high fidelity virtual translation
  • Modify a basic team training or high-fidelity simulation from in-person to virtual
  • Identify available resources on campus to help support virtual simulation implementation
