AAP TECaN National Advocacy Campaign: 'Bridging Transitions of Care from Hospital to Community for the NICU Parent' (EM622-042022)

This 10-Part virtual/on-demand webinar series will bring together experts from across the nation to discuss topics related to NICU family mental health and wellness.  Parental mental health needs are extremely prevalent in the NICU. Despite the high needs and impact on child and family outcomes, most NICUs do not currently have a standard of care to address familial mental health. Our purpose through the National AAP TECaN Carousel Care Campaign is to educate NICU providers across all scopes of practice on how to identify and address family wellness needs. This session will focus on the importance of considering the mental health needs of families and the barriers they might face early in discharge planning. Particular attention will be paid to the needs of the entire family unit, including the non-gestational parent.

Target Audience

This activity is appropriate for Providers, Advanced Practitioners, Nurses that specialize in Critical Care Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Palliative Care, Pediatrics and/or Psychiatry as well as and other Healthcare professionals with an interest in addressing NICU familial mental health and wellness needs.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the importance of integrating conversations around mental health needs into discharge planning, focusing on the family as a unit.
  2. Discuss the importance of care coordination and collaboration amongst inpatient and outpatient providers
  3. Identify common barriers faced by NICU families as they transition home
  4. Discuss community resources and tools available to families, including online resources and social media networks
  5. Recognize the unique needs of non-gestational parents at discharge.
