This will be a full-day educational event focusing on updating community and internal physicians, nurses, and staff on the current landscape of cancer genetics. Topics will include an update on genetic syndromes and management, genetic counseling/testing strategies, population screening, and patients' experiences with genetic testing and living with a genetic predisposition to cancer. After attending, the audience should leave with a better understanding of hereditary predisposition syndromes, management guidelines, and testing criteria. This will aid them in their own practices and improve patient care.

Target Audience

This symposium is designed for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurses, and specialists in Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Genetic Counseling  that are interested in the current scope of hereditary cancer.

  • Discuss updated testing and management guidelines for patients at risk for hereditary breast, colon, and pancreatic cancers.
  • Identify newly described genes associated with breast, colon and pancreatic cancer.
  • Identify patients who may benefit from tumor genomic testing or germline testing to introduce new therapeutic options.
  • Identify and manage patients with VHL and other hereditary kidney cancer predisposition syndromes based on current consensus guidelines.
  • Identify and discuss unaffected patients who are at risk for Lynch syndrome.
  • Discuss a patient’s view on medical management, and identify the psychosocial components that come with living with a genetic disease.
