2020 Texas Transplantation Society Annual Scientific Meeting (JS2007A)
Organ Transplantation is a rapidly expanding field with constant changes and innovations aimed at best serving our ever-expanding patient population. Innovation and change while exciting and beneficial to our patients present challenges that can be difficult to keep up with in the field as a whole. Two Keynote Lectures from national leaders will be given on topics at the forefront of our field. These include Resilience and Burnout in Healthcare Professions and Donor After Cardiac Death Animation of the Heart with the Warm Perfusion Device. The rest of the expert speakers will address topics in several different areas of organ transplantation as well as updates on the global changes in transplantation that were introduced in the 2019 meeting which will allow us to evaluate the outcomes of these changes and ensure that changes and innovations are best serving our transplant patients.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and discuss the expanded use of DCD donors and the evolving technologies.
- Describe the diagnostic implications and resuscitative effects of these technologies on the DCD organ.
- Analyze the advances/developments in indications, patient selection, donor selection, islet processing and post-transplant treatment for both islet cell and auto-islet transplantation.
- Based on current literature and/or high volume center experience, debate the appropriate timing of Hepatitis C treatment post-transplant which may or not vary based on organ transplanted.
- Identify the causes of physician burnout and what factors can be modified especially in the workplace environment.
- Discuss resources for building resilience to potentially prevent burnout, help treat burnout and prevent physician suicide.
- Discuss how transplant patients faired from an infection and survival standpoint during the COVID 19 epidemic in order to determine the best course of action in the face of future COVID 19 infections or another novel virus.
- Identify and discuss the indications for use of the donor organ perfusion assist devices, outcomes, complications/pitfalls (specially to what extent these devices can be used for marginal organs).
- Review and discuss the data-driven results that will help guide our selection of living kidney donors
