AAP TECaN National Advocacy Campaign: 'How to Advocate for Mental Health Resources within your NICU' (EM622-100522)

This 10-Part virtual/on-demand webinar series will bring together experts from across the nation to discuss topics related to NICU family mental health and wellness.  Parental mental health needs are extremely prevalent in the NICU. Despite the high needs and impact on child and family outcomes, most NICUs do not currently have a standard of care to address familial mental health. Our purpose through the National AAP TECaN Carousel Care Campaign is to educate NICU providers across all scopes of practice on how to identify and address family wellness needs. This session will focus on the implementation of family and caregiver mental health programs within the NICU as a new standard of care. A panel of experts will share their experiences in creating and working within such programs by creating the necessary structural framework for NICU family mental health initiatives, advocating for institutional support, and fostering a culture that embraces their importance. Strategies for creating family mental health programs in both resource-limited and resource-rich NICUs will be explored.

  1. Identify the central components of a comprehensive NICU family mental health program.
  2. Recognize strategies to engage unit and institutional leadership in discussions regarding creation of a comprehensive NICU family mental health program.
  3. Review how a NICU family mental health program can be implemented in both resource-limited and resource-rich settings.
  4. Recognize the importance of fostering a unit culture that promotes engagement in mental health supports.
